On May 24 and 25, 1864, Lt. Gen. Wm. J. Hardee of the Confederate States maintained headquarters here during operations in this sector as he tried to determine the position of McPherson’s Army of the Tennessee, the right wing of Sherman’s United States forces. On the 24th, uncertain where McPherson would place his troops, Hardee extended Johnston’s Confederate left southeast to Powder Springs, but he was recalled on the 25th when McPherson’s seizure and occupation of Dallas became known. Cleburne’s division of the Confederate corps passed the house en route to Powder Springs and on the return march north to New Hope Church and the battlefield of Pickett’s Mill.
