Lieutenant General Leonidas Polk’s corps, which had moved from Allatoona as the left flank of Johnston’s Confederate army via Lost Mountain and Mount Tabor Church, reached this vicinity on May 24, 1864. After Hardee’s army corps returned from Powder Springs on May 25, Polk’s troops formed the center of Johnston’s line facing the Federal lines to the west. When deployed, Polk’s left was at Wigley’s Mill in the gap of Ellsberry Mountain, and his center and right were at and above New Hope Church, a position he held during the ten days of conflict mostly fought on the army’s left and right.
