The Smoky Hill Trail, used by the Butterfield Overland Despatch route from Atchison to Denver, was traversed by Gen. Fremont in 1844, carried the first Denver stagecoach in 1859, and was later retraced and mapped by Howard C. Raynesford Ellis of Kansas; the site was marked in 1963.
