American bison face threats from habitat loss, hybridization with cattle, and the spread of cattle diseases. They are now mainly found on private and protected grasslands in scattered areas of the western United States and Canada. Bison are not buffalo, as true buffalo live in Africa and Asia. In 2016, bison were named the national mammal of the U.S.A. They are fast and agile, can run up to 35 mph, can jump fences, are expert swimmers, and have excellent senses of smell and hearing. In managed settings, cut trees are provided for sparring, and ice blocks with food frozen inside help them cool down on hot summer days.
