Hyner Cemetery, established in 1898, marks the site of devout, courageous Italian immigrants who came to America in 1895, settled and worked at Sunnyside Plantation and throughout the Delta area, established schools and churches, and entered into the life of local communities in pursuit of freedom, opportunity, and happiness as they realized the American Dream. Their achievements came at great sacrifice, as they struggled against exploitation and prejudice, and malaria epidemics killed many of them. Descendants of those immigrants still farm this land.
