From 1886 to 1912, Swedish settlers helped populate the county by settling in three areas, East Sweden, West Sweden, and Melvin. Most of the 95 families who colonized here were farmers, while others were carpenters, stone masons, and blacksmiths. They established a thriving farm economy that has continued to the present day.
