Opened in 1887, the Windermere Schoolhouse is the only surviving one-room schoolhouse in Orange County and one of the few still standing in Florida. This Frame Vernacular building with a metal roof was communally constructed from locally milled heartwood of Florida long leaf pine, and a well dug near the front door remains. Maude Adams, one of its first full-time teachers, taught generations of settlers and town builders here, earning $22 per month to educate 22 pupils in grades K-12, the children of citrus grove owners and workers. During the early 20th century, the building also served as headquarters for the local Board of Trade, a Women's Club, a Union Church, a polling station, and a meeting hall. It ceased to be used as a schoolhouse in 1916 after a larger school complex was established. In 1918, Lloyd and Minnie Armstrong acquired the building and surrounding property from real estate developer Cal Palmer and converted it into a cracker style home by adding two sleeping wings and a broad covered porch. The former schoolhouse became the home's kitchen and dining room, and eight of the Armstrongs' nine children were raised there, while citrus trees and ornamentals planted by the family still remain. During the 1930s, the Works Progress Administration built an outhouse at the back of the property. After the deaths of her parents, their daughter Eunice Armstrong-Parramore acquired the property, and in 1995 Eunice and Manuel "Perry" Parramore deeded it to the Town of Windermere as a historic legacy. The additions were removed, the building was restored to its original schoolhouse form, and in 2011 citizens organized to stop an effort to move it that would have compromised its historic integrity. On January 31, 2012, Windermere voters overwhelmingly passed a town charter amendment to preserve the 1880s schoolhouse in its original location. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, it still stands beside a citrus grove, within sight of Lake Butler, beneath historic trees.
