Carrollton on the Wabash was laid out with 90 lots in 1836 on both sides of a Wabash and Erie Canal lock. It had a post office in 1838 and 1839. The lock passed canal boats into the river on the pool of the Great Dam at Pittsburg, five miles below. Mules carried the towline across the covered bridge to the towpath on the south bank and were rehitched. The Mentzer Tavern stood here until 1915, and the Speece Bros. Warehouse and the Fort Dearborn Trail were one-half mile east.
