Lackawanna State Park in northeastern Pennsylvania centers on the man-made Lake Lackawanna and occupies land shaped by centuries of changing use. Its name traces through the nearby valley to a Lenape word meaning “stream that forks,” and the area once lay along a Lenape trail later followed by early settlers. By the late 19th century it hosted the Maitland Fair and Driving Park Association and a horse racing course, and it later passed through railroad and private ownership before Pennsylvania bought it in 1968 and opened the park in 1972. Today it is a major recreation area for boating, fishing, hunting, trails, camping, and seasonal winter activities.
