Christy Mathewson, the famed baseball pitcher, was born in Factoryville. He attended Keystone Academy from 1895 to 1898 and Bucknell University from 1898 to 1901. He was with the New York Giants from 1900 to 1926 and the Cincinnati Reds from 1916 to 1918, and he pitched 373 winning games, achieving a National League record. He served overseas in World War I. As one of the first five players in the Hall of Fame in 1936, he was seen as a gentleman in a rough-and-tumble baseball era.
