Malabar Farm State Park preserves Louis Bromfield’s former home and working farm in Pleasant Valley near Lucas, Ohio. Bromfield established the property beginning in 1938 and 1939, building it into a large farm and literary retreat centered on the Big House, developed with architect Louis Lamoreux. There he wrote many books, welcomed prominent visitors, and gained lasting attention when Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall married there in 1945. Equally important, Bromfield used the farm to advance his New Agriculture, promoting soil conservation and sustainable methods that made Malabar a national model. After his death, the property passed to Ohio and became a state park in 1976.
