South Cape Mendocino State Marine Reserve is an offshore protected area near Petrolia at California’s westernmost point, along a notably undeveloped and rugged stretch of coast. Established in 2012 as part of the state’s network of marine protected areas, it prohibits the take of all living marine resources. Its importance lies chiefly in protecting habitat for bird and marine mammal populations, including Steller and California sea lions, and breeding seabirds such as western gulls, Brandt’s cormorants, and tufted puffins. The surrounding cape is also known for scenic recreation, including wildlife viewing, hiking, windsurfing, tidepooling, and the steep cycling climb called “The Wall.”
