Built in 1918 by Burney Russell, the building first housed a business owned by Angus Droke, who later sold it to Griff Lane. Griff Lane opened Lane's Barber Shop there in 1928, and in 1955 Claude Lane joined him, making it a family business. Haircuts cost a dollar, and children also received a dusting of sweet-smelling powder, a piece of bubble gum, and a nickel until the nickel was eliminated in 1976 because inflation made money too precious. More than an affordable place for a haircut, Lane's became a gathering place where friends and neighbors met each morning to catch up on local news. Griff kept track of birthdays, graduations, and other events in calendars and tattered black books held together with rubber bands, and he phoned people on their birthdays. In the friendly barbershop atmosphere, countless deals and decisions were made, secrets were shared, and lives were changed. Griff Lane retired in 1984, and Koonce, Erwin, and Wilkes Insurance Agency bought the building and remains its owner.
