On 7 February 1951 in the vicinity of Soam-Ni, Korea, Captain Lewis L. Millett Sr. of Company E, 27th Infantry Regiment, United States Army, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty while leading his company in an attack against a strongly held position. After seeing that the 1st Platoon was pinned down by small-arms, automatic, and antitank fire, he ordered the 3rd Platoon forward, placed himself at the head of the two platoons, and with fixed bayonet led the assault up the fire-swept hill. In the charge he bayoneted two enemy soldiers and continued forward, throwing grenades, clubbing and bayoneting the enemy, and shouting encouragement to his men. Despite intense opposing fire, the hand-to-hand assault reached the crest of the hill, and his leadership and personal example inspired his men to storm the hostile position and use their bayonets so effectively that the enemy fled in wild disorder. Although wounded by grenade fragments during the attack, he refused evacuation until the objective was taken and firmly secured, and his leadership, courage, and devotion to duty were directly responsible for the successful accomplishment of the hazardous mission.
