The “Big Quarry”
Industry
4
Around 1895, Berea’s sandstone quarries extended south of the buildings on East Bridge Street, which formed their northern boundary. From approximately this vantage point, the scene included what Anna M. Nokes called the “Big Quarry,” where water gradually entered the excavated basin, rising from a small pool until the workmen gathered their tools and allowed it to fill to the brim, transforming a place once full of busy sounds into a quiet, blue body of water glimmering in the sunlight.
