The 392nd Bomb Group served with the 8th Air Force of the U.S. Army Air Forces at Station 118, Wendling, from July 1943 to June 1945, where 825 airmen gave their lives and many others served with them at the base. The base also included the 465th Sub-Depot (Class 1), 10th Station Complement Squadron, 1217th Q.M. Service Group (R.S.), 1825th Ordnance S & M Co. (AVN), 1287th Military Police Det. "A," 806th Chemical Co. (AO) Det. "A," 586th Army Postal Unit, 208th Finance Detachment, and 2101st Engr, Fire Fighting Platoon, as well as the 18th Weather Sqd., all part of the United States Eighth Air Force. Within the 392nd Bomb Group (H) were Headquarters and the 576th, 577th, 578th, and 579th Bombardment Squadrons (H) of the United States Eighth Air Force.
