Established in 1682 by Don Antonio de Otermin and Fray Francisco Ayeta O.F.M., this was the first mission and pueblo in Texas, maintained by Franciscan missionaries for the civilizing and Christianizing of the Tigua Indians, who were refugees from the Pueblo Revolt.
