Corporal John W Dodds, a member of the 3838 QM (GS) company, was killed in 1944 during World War II. His sister, Anne Mae Dodds Lutes, last saw him when he left for boot camp, after which he went overseas without seeing his family again. Dodds was married and had three children, and after his death it took more than a year for his remains to be returned to the United States. In his honor, some World War I veterans and fellow miners made an emblem from inch plate steel and donated it to the Carmichaels V.F.W. Post 3491. His brother-in-law, known locally as Fiddler Jim from Jefferson, Pa., was a barber and a coal miner with Poland Mines. The veterans performed military rites, and his sister Anne finally received long-deserved closure to her brother's death. The emblem was later repainted by Terry Martin of Dunbar, Pa., and re-dedicated by Skip Black at the V.F.W.'s 100th anniversary in September 1999.
