Sugar Grove Petroglyphs is an important Native American rock-art site in southwestern Pennsylvania, carved into a sandstone outcrop in Monongahela Township near eastern Greene County. About 48 carvings have been recorded on a roughly 23-foot-square surface, though erosion and later damage have obscured some figures and a few carvings were added by vandals after European settlement. The makers remain uncertain, with archaeologists proposing links to the Monongahela or Fort Ancient cultures and James L. Swauger arguing in 1974 for a Monongahela-related, proto-Shawnee identity. Noted in scholarship by 1931 and later documented in detail, the site gained lasting importance through its preservation, uncommon inland survival, and 1986 listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
