Hank Schlesser was born in Evergreen Park, IL, and moved to Raymond after his Fran married Ralph Benning. Having worked on boats and on electrical and mechanical things as a teenager, he opened a TV repair business and boat dealership in Raymond with a loan from the First National Bank of Raymond. In May 1964, he started Hank's Sales & Services in a building he bought from Earl Flint, receiving Admiral and Motorola franchises for radio, television, and stereo sales and service. In July 1964, he bought the building next door from Mrs. Oscar Johnson, Earl Flint's sister, obtained the Mercury motor franchise for Montgomery County, and added Glastron, Start craft, Larson 7 Mark Twain, Dilly, Shoreline Boat Trailers, and Star craft and Coachmen camping trailers. As the marine business grew, he remodeled the building into a showroom and added a service area behind both buildings with help from his father, Riley Schiesser, then added an apartment above the store and lived there. In 1967, he married Joyce, who became an essential part of the business. During the 1970's and 80's, he continued to carry Mercury outboards and added Ranger and Lowe brands; as televisions became less durable, he closed that business, and because boating had become primary, he ended camper sales to focus on boat sales and service. He operated from this location until 1987, when he bought the former Case Implement dealership and moved across town to a larger facility at 606 N. O'Bannon, where he expanded sales and service and his children, Tricha and Todd, assisted. He also added Four Winns, Lund, and Avalon boats. Hank's Sales became one of the oldest Mercury and Ranger dealers in the country and continued through good and bad times from the 1960's through 2020 and beyond.
