The Spain Creek Covered Bridge was designed and built by Reuben Partridge in the 1870s. Partridge began his bridge-building career in 1866. At 64 feet long, it is the smallest of Union County's historic covered bridges. Spain Creek flows beneath it to a nearby confluence with Big Darby Creek. It is one of five remaining covered bridges designed and built by Partridge, with four in Union County and one in Franklin County. Its windows and awnings are not original, having been added before the 1930s. In 1988, it was rehabilitated by constructing a bridge inside it. Large wood girders and wood floor panels now carry modern traffic loads, while the old wood trusses carry only their own weight and the weight of the roof and siding.
