Elephant Butte is the highest point in Arches National Park, a 5,653-foot flat-topped sandstone summit in eastern Utah. Formed of Entrada Sandstone and standing above an underground salt bed, it is part of the geologic setting that created the area’s arches, spires, balanced rocks, and eroded monoliths. The butte rises among fins and rock towers, including Parade of Elephants, and runoff from it drains east toward the Colorado River. Double Arch is part of Elephant Butte and became widely recognized as the backdrop for the opening scene of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Its summit was first climbed on September 8, 1953.
