Prince Gallitzin State Park in west-central Pennsylvania centers on Glendale Lake, a man-made reservoir that defines the park’s camping, boating, fishing, swimming, and trail system. The park is named for Prince Demetrius Gallitzin, a Russian nobleman turned Catholic priest who founded nearby Loretto in 1799 and helped establish the first English-speaking Catholic settlement west of the Allegheny Front. Plans for recreation in the area began during the Great Depression, but the modern project took shape in the 1950s, with Glendale Dam and Lake built through state-backed development. Dedicated in 1965, the park became a major regional destination for outdoor recreation and sport.
