Borden Flats Light stands at the mouth of the Taunton River in Somerset, Massachusetts, marking a dangerous reef near Fall River where the river opens into Mount Hope Bay. Built in 1881 as a cast-iron sparkplug lighthouse for a growing industrial port, it replaced an inadequate day beacon and helped guide steamboat and other traffic. The offshore light was later electrified, automated, and modernized as lighthouse technology changed. Struck by the Hurricane of 1938, it was pushed about 100 feet and left with a noticeable five-degree lean that still shows today. Its rare design, long service, restoration, and adaptive reuse have made it a distinctive southern New England landmark.
