Major Daniel McCook of Carrollton, his nine sons, and their cousins, the five sons of Dr. John McCook of Steubenville, won popular acclaim for outstanding service in the United States Army and Navy during the Civil War. Known as the "Tribe of Dan," Major Daniel was mortally wounded at Buffington Island; Major Latimer was a surgeon; Brigadier General George was an early regimental commander; Midshipman John died at sea; Brigadier General Alexander commanded the 20th Corps; Brigadier General Daniel Jr. was mortally wounded at Kennesaw Mt.; Major General Edwin served under Grant and Sherman; Private Charles was killed at Bull Run; and Colonel John was seriously wounded in Virginia. Known as the "Tribe of John," Major General Edward captured Confederates behind the lines; Brigadier General Anson served with distinction in three battles and two campaigns; Reverend Henry was a chaplain; Marine Lieutenant Roderick accepted the surrender of a Confederate regiment; and Lieutenant John served when only 18 years old.
