Alfred Cuthbert (1785-1856), born in Savannah, was the son of Colonel Seth John Cuthbert, the brother of Congressman John Cuthbert, and the grandson of Revolutionary patriot Joseph Clay. A colonel of Volunteer Infantry, he served in both houses of the Georgia Legislature and in Congress for several terms, then was a United States Senator from 1835 to 1843, succeeding John Forsyth after Forsyth was named Secretary of State by President Andrew Jackson. This house, built in the early 1800's, was Cuthbert's home for a number of years. He died here and was buried in Summerville Cemetery in Augusta.
