Hobo Cedar Grove Botanical Area is a protected old-growth cedar forest near Clarkia in Idaho’s St. Joe National Forest. Covering about 240 acres, it preserves western red cedars estimated to be around 500 years old. Its botanical significance is reflected in the distinct character of its upper and lower sections: the upper area mixes western red cedar with Oregon boxwood, while the lower portion contains giant cedars surrounded by lady-fern. Recognized as a National Natural Landmark in 1980, the grove is valued for its unusual plant communities as well as its preserved ancient forest landscape.
