Curtis Island Light marks the approach to Camden Harbor from a small island that also helps shield the harbor from ocean storms. Authorized in 1835 and placed in service in 1836, the station was first known by the island’s former name before the island was renamed in 1934 for Cyrus H. K. Curtis. The historic light station includes an 1889 keeper’s house built on the original foundation, an 1896 circular brick tower, an oil house, toolshed, dock, and connecting path. It also served as a signal tower for ships headed to Bangor. Preserved after local residents urged town ownership, it was automated in 1972 and the island is now a town park.
