The American Independence Museum in Exeter, New Hampshire, centers on the Ladd-Gilman House and Folsom Tavern and interprets the American Revolution through Exeter’s experience and the Gilman family’s role in the early United States. Its defining artifact is a rare Dunlap Broadside of the Declaration of Independence, discovered in 1985 hidden in the Ladd-Gilman House and one of only 26 known survivors. The broadside had first arrived in Exeter in 1776, when John Taylor Gilman read it publicly. The site also preserves the home of prominent Gilman family members, a Revolutionary-era tavern visited by George Washington in 1789, and collections including draft copies of the U.S. Constitution and a Badge of Military Merit.
