On March 3, 1860, Abraham Lincoln delivered the last of his four New Hampshire speeches at Exeter Town Hall. He had strong ties to Exeter through Amos Tuck of that town, who is credited with creating the Republican Party. Lincoln and Tuck both served in Congress from 1847 to 1850. At Tuck's suggestion, Lincoln enrolled his son Robert in Phillips Exeter Academy. Lincoln and Tuck both promoted free-state policies and opposed the extension of slavery into the western territories.
