Installed at Unity Bridge on October 30, 2014 to celebrate the Greater Holland-Zeeland area's rich diversity, "Uniting Sun" and "New Dawn Rising" use form, color, and perspective to express shared humanity and inclusion. The five vertical elements of "Uniting Sun" appear to differ in size but are actually identical in length, reflecting that individuals may seem physically different yet share common values, needs, and aspirations. Its changing appearance from different angles suggests that different points of view must be appreciated to understand the community as a whole, while the round sun symbolizes the light of truth and unity in building the community together. The twelve sun discs of "New Dawn Rising," mounted on posts along Unity Bridge, use six paired opposites in varied designs and colors to reinforce diversity, and their color progression evokes a rising sun that reflects the community's growing awareness of diversity and inclusion as essential to innovation, adaptation, and prosperity in a changing world.
