Chicano Park in Barrio Logan, south of downtown San Diego, arose from decades of disruption as residents lost bay access during World War II, faced industrial rezoning, and saw Interstate 5 and bridge construction remove more than 5,000 homes and businesses. After the city failed to build a promised park, residents occupied the site on April 22, 1970, stopping a parking lot project and forcing negotiations. Leaders including Mario Solis and Josephine Talamantez helped turn that struggle into lasting organization. Artists then transformed the space beneath the San Diego-Coronado Bridge with murals and other works expressing Chicano history, culture, and politics, making the park a major civic and cultural landmark.
