Jay Street Bridge crosses the West Branch Susquehanna River between Lock Haven and Lockport, continuing a long-used link between the town and routes on the opposite shore. The first bridge, an approximately 800-foot covered wooden span completed in 1852, included a toll house with a central archway for travelers and a separate covered pedestrian walkway. Its location is closely tied to Lock Haven’s river and canal past, near remnants of the Bald Eagle Crosscut Canal and the dam that fed the West Branch Canal. After the wooden bridge burned in 1919, it was replaced by iron, then by the present steel girder bridge in 1986.
