Duxbury Pier Light stands on the north side of Plymouth Harbor’s main channel, where it was built in 1871 to warn ships away from the shoal off Saquish Head. Nicknamed Bug Light, its distinctive coffeepot shape made it the first sparkplug lighthouse in the United States. The offshore station endured harsh weather, including the Hurricane of 1944, and later faced deterioration, automation in 1964, and repeated threats of replacement. Local residents and advocates organized preservation campaigns in the 1980s and 1990s, restoring and refurbishing the structure. It remains both an active navigational aid and a cherished landmark in Plymouth Harbor.
