The Mulberry Street cemetery complex served the people of LaGrange and the South between 1863 and at least the 1930s. Its oldest section is the Stonewall Jackson Confederate Cemetery, where soldiers from all thirteen Southern states are buried. The Confederate Army established hospitals in LaGrange to treat wounded soldiers, and men injured in Civil War battles around Atlanta arrived by the Atlanta & West Point Railroad around 1863 and 1864. The wrought iron fence around the cemetery had originally surrounded the courthouse on the square in downtown LaGrange from the 1800s until 1902, and it was moved to the cemetery before the new courthouse opened in 1904; that courthouse later burned in November 1936. Eight unmarked graves west of the Confederate Cemetery fence are believed to be those of hospital orderlies and may have been slaves, and a few marked graves also stand in that area. About 425 graves lie west and south of the Confederate Cemetery, and although the names and death dates of those buried there have been lost, they are believed to have been blacks who died between 1865 and the early 1900s. Some were buried in vaults, while others appear to have been paupers buried in cloth wrapping. The grave locations were identified in 2015 through a City of LaGrange and Troup County Historical Society project using underground radar, and in 2016 permanent metal discs were installed to mark each gravesite. The City Council of LaGrange officially named the area the Mulberry Street Cemeteries on April 12, 2016. The most notable person buried there is Horace King, the nineteenth-century bridge builder and legislator, who is buried there with his son Marshal; Horace died in 1885 and Marshal in 1879, and other King family members are believed to be buried nearby. The cemetery complex is distinctive for combining Confederate-era burials with the gravesites of blacks who died in the latter part of the nineteenth century.
