John Dodge, one of Vernon’s four founding fathers, settled on this land in the fall of 1836 and purchased it from the federal government on September 20, 1838. He made his home here until his death on August 29, 1858. The cemetery began as a small family burial ground, and later many early Vernon settlers were buried here. During its active years, the Dodges Corners Cemetery Association ran the cemetery, and it is now cared for by the Town of Vernon.
