Effie, Louisiana, was established around 1898. Early settlers knew the area as "Point Maigre." Benjamin F. Garlington became postmaster and renamed the area "Effie" after his daughter, and he ran the post office out of his house near this site. Effie became the focal point of Ward One when LaFargue High School was built in 1929, consolidating all schools of the area.
