Yonah Mountain, or Mount Yonah, is a ridge in north Georgia’s Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest between Cleveland and Helen, its name derived from the Cherokee word for bear. A trail from Chambers Road reaches the summit in about 2.3 miles, climbing roughly 1,500 feet, with side paths toward Pink Mountain. The mountain’s steep cliffs support both recreation and military training: it is a popular rock-climbing destination and the site of the Mountain Phase of Ranger School for the United States Army’s 5th Ranger Training Battalion. It is also tied to a regional legend of the Cherokee woman Nacoochee and the Chickasaw warrior Sautee, a story popularized by George Williams in 1871.
