King Mountain was probably named for Guy King, a rancher who drilled the first water well on top of the mountain about 1900. Its elevation is 3,000 feet. It is part of an uplift in the southern Permian Basin and is associated with county oil fields. Many Indian relics have been found along the Rim Rock.
