William Mentor Graham was born and raised in Green County and served as headmaster of Greensburg Academy, located at this site, from 1818 to 1823. In 1826, he moved to New Salem, Illinois, where Abraham Lincoln attended his school and learned grammar and arithmetic. They remained close, and Lincoln invited Graham to sit on the platform for his 1861 presidential inauguration.
