Cloudcroft Peaks rises 8,714 feet in the Lewis Range of Glacier National Park in Montana and forms part of the park’s rugged mountain landscape. Like many Glacier peaks, it consists of sedimentary rock laid down in ancient shallow seas from the Precambrian through the Jurassic. Its geologic setting was shaped by the Lewis Overthrust, which began about 170 million years ago and pushed a massive slab of older Precambrian rock over younger Cretaceous rock. The mountain lies in an alpine subarctic climate zone marked by long, very cold winters, short, cool to mild summers, and winter conditions that can bring extreme cold and dangerous wind chill.
