Piney Grove United Methodist Church traces its Methodist origins to South Carolinians who established the foundation of the congregation one hundred fifty-six years earlier. Recognition for the construction of the church's third building goes mainly to Capt. E. C. Leech, whose influence was largely responsible for its building, with able assistance from David Parker Tunnell, a member of the Church of Christ, and both men were descendants of Piney Grove's founders. The building was dedicated in May, 1892, in the Columbus circuit of the Columbus district. Mrs. Locky Adams Wood Davis, the only surviving member present at the dedication, was the stepmother of Frances Harriet Davis, wife of Capt. E. C. Leech.
