Franklin Pierce lies buried in the nearby Minot enclosure. A native son of New Hampshire, he was a graduate of Bowdoin College, a lawyer, an effective political leader, a Congressman and U.S. Senator, a Mexican War veteran, and a courageous advocate of States’ Rights, popularly known as “Young Hickory of the Granite Hills.”
