East Granby Landing of Friday’s Ferry, licensed in 1754 across the Congaree River, lay 1 mile west. Floods destroyed two bridges built in 1791 and 1796 by Wade Hampton I. President Washington crossed here on May 22, 1791, during his southern tour. Mt. Tacitus, 3 miles south, was a plantation of Charles Pinckney (1757-1824), four times governor of South Carolina.
