Fort Ashby was erected in 1755 by Lieutenant John Bacon under orders from George Washington and was garrisoned with twenty-one men. In August 1756, Lieutenant Robert Rutherford, with a company of Rangers, was defeated there by the French and Indians. The fort was named for Colonel John Ashby, who arrived there after a remarkable escape from the Indians. Ashby commanded the fort until after the Revolutionary War. The W.P.A. restored the fort in 1939.
