Kane Mountain
Nature
Kane Mountain, in New York’s Adirondack region north of Canada Lake, is best known for the historic fire tower on its summit. The sixty-foot steel-frame lookout was erected in 1925 as a prefabricated Aermotor Corporation structure and formed part of the system that protected the Adirondack Forest Preserve from forest fires. The site also includes an observer’s cabin built around 1960 and the associated foot trail, both recognized with the tower as historic resources. Beyond its historic importance, Kane Mountain is a popular short hike, with routes from Green Lake Road to the summit and access nearby to trails leading to Stewart Lake and Indian Lake campsites.
