Silver Lake Wilderness Area is a protected section of New York’s Adirondack Park spanning the towns of Lake Pleasant, Benson, Wells, and Arietta. Its terrain is relatively low and rolling for the Adirondacks, with only four summits above 3,000 feet, and much of its character comes from wet landscapes, including conifer swamps, beaver meadows, and 48 lakes and ponds. Forests of hardwoods and softwoods include notable hemlock stands, with spruce and balsam on swamps and higher slopes. Silver Lake is the best-known destination, especially for brook trout fishing, and the area also supports hiking, paddling, and quiet backcountry recreation on trails, lean-tos, and a canoe route.
