Patriot David Janes, a descendant of William Bradford III, first Governor of the Plymouth Colony, was born in 1762 and served the cause of American independence from England as a dedicated soldier. In the spring of 1782, he enlisted at Brimfield, Massachusetts, and served for over a year in Captain Killum's Company in Colonel Rufus Putnam's Fifth Massachusetts of the Continental Line. He later transferred to Colonel Vorst's Regiment, also of the Continental Line, and was discharged from service at Philadelphia in November 1783, shortly after the signing of the Peace Treaty that September. In 1843, Janes certified before a Milwaukee Justice of the Peace that he intended to spend his remaining years with his son, Lewis, in Walworth County. He died in LaGrange Township on September 29, 1848, at age 86 and was buried in this cemetery.
