Whitewater Lake sits at the southern edge of the Kettle Moraine State Forest’s Southern Unit, within more than 22,000 protected acres in southern Wisconsin. Covering about 625 acres near Whitewater, it anchors a varied landscape where forest, restored prairie, farms, and homes meet. The lake is a popular place for camping, boat access, and fishing, especially for panfish and largemouth bass, while nearby Rice Lake shares similar habitat. Surrounding woods include oak, maple, birch, and pine, and a section of the Ice Age Trail passes nearby. Together with the Clifford Messinger Dry Prairie and Savanna Preserve, the area combines recreation with the protection of diverse prairie, savanna, and forest communities.
