General John H. Morgan's CSA cavalry of 2,000 camped three miles east on July 7, 1863. The next day they crossed the river at Brandenburg on two captured steamers, repelling attacks by the gunboat ELK and Indiana militia. They moved through Indiana into northeastern Ohio, where they were captured on July 26. Morgan escaped prison on November 24 and returned south. The raid sought to prevent a USA move to Tennessee and Virginia.
